Are you (or someone you know) a man who takes pride in his appearance? Did you know there are several non-invasive treatments available to rejuvenate the skin, improve masculine features, combat the signs of aging, and even sculpt the body?
Some men worry that cosmetic procedures are meant for women, will drastically change their appearance, or somehow make them look feminine. But a skilled practitioner appreciates the differences between male and female aesthetic goals and will deliver a natural looking, masculine result.
More men than ever are looking to improve their appearance (and confidence) via these types of treatments. In fact, between 2000 and 2017 there was a 76% increase in men seeking non-invasive cosmetic procedures. The rising popularity of these procedures is due in part to their quick and safe nature. There’s also no real downtime; so patients can immediately return to work or social gatherings following treatment.
Below is a list of the most popular aesthetic treatments for men. Keep in mind that many patients benefit from a combination of treatments, tailored to their specific concerns.
(Click on the highlighted links for more in-depth information on a topic.)
Kybella is the top-selling men’s treatment as of 2017. It’s popular because it’s an injectable that permanently dissolves pockets of fat, most notably the “double chin.” The result is a more defined, chiseled jawline.
Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid, a salt found in human bile that helps digest fat. Deoxycholic acid breaks down fat cells in the digestive tract by destroying the cell membrane. Once injected with Kybella, fat cells get cleared into the lymphatic and circulatory systems over several weeks. The fat is then metabolized and excreted by the body as waste.
Between one and three vials of Kybella are usually required, depending on the amount of unwanted fat. Two to four treatments (or visits) give optimal results. A single treatment consists of about 20 injections. You’ll receive a local anesthetic and ice to help minimize any discomfort. Expect some swelling after treatment and avoid vigorous exercise for a couple of days.
Patients should schedule Kybella treatments one month apart. It can take three to four months for full results to materialize.
Kybella permanently eliminates fat cells, so provided your weight remains stable, you can count on a permanent outcome.
Do your eyes look tired? Do you perpetually look angry or stressed? Botox injections are a great way to look more relaxed, refreshed and awake.
Botox for forehead lines or around the eyes (“crow’s feet”) is a popular treatment for men. But Botox smooths any lines caused by facial expressions; or what are known as “dynamic wrinkles.” It relaxes the facial muscles responsible for these lines.
Conservative use of Botox can merely soften the lines, which many men prefer over an overly smooth look.
In addition to reducing lines on the face, Botox is popular for treating excessive perspiration. It effectively reduces sweat for six to eight months with no real side effects.
In a fifteen-minute procedure, a small needle delivers Botox under the skin in a few strategic spots (depending on the area being treated). Expect to feel a slight pinch. Avoid exercise the same day or rubbing or massaging the injected area. You’ll see the results of your treatment in about 5-7 days. Botox lasts three to four months.
PRP for Hair Loss/Thinning
PRP or platelet rich plasma has a long history of use across several fields of medicine. Recently it has become popular for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration.
Platelets are the cells in the blood that help tissue heal and encourage the growth of new cells within our bodies.
PRP therapy for hair loss is a three-step process: Blood is drawn from the patient, the platelets are separated in a centrifuge, and the PRP is injected into the scalp. Once injected, it initiates a stem-cell response that triggers hair growth and maintains the fortitude of existing hair.
PRP can also be used with microneedling of the skin. Over the months following a treatment, collagen-producing cells replace damaged or lost tissue with fresh, healthy skin. The result is a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, improved skin texture and tone, and increased collagen.
Adverse reactions are not a concern with PRP because the treatment comes from the patient’s own body.
There is no downtime after PRP injections. You may notice some mild redness or a slight numbness of the scalp for several hours but can to return to normal daily activities immediately. You should wait 12 hours to shower or shampoo and 72 hours to use any chemicals on the scalp like hair color. Microneedling with PRP will leave your skin a bit pink for a few hours. Unwanted bulge? Stubborn fat deposits that won’t budge no matter how much you diet or exercise? CoolSculpt can help! CoolSculpt is a versatile treatment for helping to sculpt your body.
The scientific name for the actual procedure is cryolipolysis. Cryolipolysis involves causing irreversible damage to fat cells under the skin by freezing them. Fat cells are more susceptible to the effects of cold than other cells (like skin cells) are. The damaged fat cells die, and they are eliminated by the body over time. Results become visible after a few weeks, but full results appear after about three months. A 20-30% reduction of fat is typical with one treatment.
CoolSculpt is FDA approved for the abdomen, “love handles,” thighs, “bra fat,” back fat, under the butt, upper arms, and double chins; but can target almost any bulge that has enough fat for the applicator to adhere to. It’s recommended for people close to their ideal weight with stubborn fat deposits.
During treatment, a vacuum-like applicator uses suction to target fat cells. Next, cooling plates bring the temperature of the fat cells down just low enough to damage them. Patients experience a cold sensation for the first five minutes, followed by numbness. Most areas require 35-60 minutes of cooling.
With age our skin becomes lax, leading to loss of facial definition. Fillers restore a fuller, tighter, and smoother appearance. Filler can emphasize masculine features like the jawline, build out the chin, or reduce jowls. It can also improve under eye hollows or fill out folds around the mouth.
Injectable dermal fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, a gel-like substance that occurs naturally in the skin. Once injected, most fillers last from 6-18 months before being absorbed by the body.
For deep structural filling of the face, a product called Bellafill is popular. It lasts five years or more. Bellafill can also be used to improve acne scarring.
The practitioner uses a small needle or cannula to inject the filler. Expect to feel a small pinch. You may require more than one treatment to restore substantial lost volume. Minor swelling and sensitivity are normal but subside after a day or two. Avoid blood thinning medications for two weeks before treatment to minimize bruising.
PDO threads lift and reshape jowls, the neck, eyebrows, and even the nose. They also plump the skin. PDO stands for polydioxanone: an absorbable material used for years in surgery. Like dissolvable sutures, the threads are absorbed by the body in 4 to 6 months, leaving behind no scar tissue.
After a local anesthetic, the injector loads a thread into a hypodermic needle. They insert the needle into the skin (slight pinch), and the thread is left behind as it’s removed.
There are several types of threads. Barbed threads provide grip under the skin. Pulling the thread tight lifts the skin. Instant results are visible, and collagen builds around the thread, securing the lift longer term. The thread works like a scaffolding, holding things in place while the skin rebuilds and repairs around it. Once dissolved, the new tissue continues holding the re-positioned skin in place.
Smooth threads encourage new collagen; resulting in tighter, thicker skin over time. The neck and under eyes are common areas treated with smooth threads. The patient can expect to see results in about 6 months.
A “PDO thread lift” can eliminate or delay more invasive procedures. They also work great on the body.
The Aerolase Laser is FDA approved for concerns including lax skin, hyperpigmentation/melasma, unwanted hair, broken capillaries, acne, rosacea, scars, wrinkles and more.
It’s the safest laser in the industry for darker or tanned skin types, working on all skin tones.
The handpiece of the device gently pulses laser energy across the skin. It vaporizes old tissue so fresh skin and collagen can grow. The result is a more even-toned, youthful appearance. Though powerful, the Aerolase is not painful. After treatment, you may return to work or other social settings without redness or swelling.
Results develop over six months. Broken capillaries resolve in about a month. Six treatments are recommended, spaced a month apart each.
Ultherapy is a highly effective procedure that stimulates collagen production using focused ultrasound energy. It’s the perfect non-surgical solution for loose skin around the neck, chin, or even under the brow. Ultherapy treats the foundational layer of the skin without cutting or disturb the skin’s surface. Focused ultrasound energy triggers brand-new collagen to regenerate; for tighter, smoother skin.
An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory taken before treatment will ensure your comfort. You’ll feel the ultrasound energy being deposited within the skin, and comfort levels vary from person to person. The sensation is brief and indicates that the energy is stimulating collagen.
The practitioner places the Ultherapy applicator against the skin, and ultrasound imaging guides them in delivering the energy into the tissue below. Depending on the area treated, Ultherapy takes anywhere from 30-90 minutes.
There’s no downtime after an Ultherapy procedure. You’ll return to your everyday activities with perhaps some temporary redness or mild swelling. Very rarely patients will have slight bruising or fleeting numbness in treated areas.
The full results of Ultherapy are visible 2-3 months after treatment as new collagen forms and begins to lift and tighten the skin.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive service to improve acne scars, wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and lax skin. Microneedling causes minuscule, controlled injury to the skin. These micro-injuries activate the wound healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen. Also, as each micro-injury heals, a tightening effect occurs. The result is smoother, firmer, more even looking skin.
Most patients report that the procedure isn’t painful. Using a device that looks like a pen, the practitioner creates hundreds of tiny micro-channels in the skin. (Essentially teeny little pinpricks all over the face.)
Thanks to all the micro-channels, any skincare products applied can then penetrate below the superficial layer of the skin. Active ingredients are most effective when they reach deeper layers of the skin. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), epidermal growth factors, or hyaluronic acid are often used with microneedling for their ability to stimulate collagen and rejuvenate skin.
There is minimal downtime with microneedling. You might be a bit pink after, but most people see their skin return to normal within 24 hours.
For best results, four to eight sessions are recommended with an occasional maintenance session after that.
